Feedback - a crucial tool for students and tutors

You'll get information in lots of different ways about the progress you are making - in conversation with tutors, by completing activities in sessions, through quizzes and discussion to name but a few.

Feedback is a two way process and learning is very much achieved in partnership with you. We offer lots of informal and formal ways for you to communicate with us about your studies and it's important that you take them up. This might mean taking time to respond to a survey, raising your hand to answer a question in class, or dropping your tutor an email if you are wrestling with a particular concept or task.

We will also offer you lots of formal assessment activities to guide your learning. The ultimate goal is that you will be able to reflect and critique your own performance and growth, you will have become an independent learner, knowledgeable and confident in your discipline.

Types of assessments

You'll have heard both Adeyemi and Vivian discuss the different types of assessments in earlier section. Here, we've pulled together a list of a few example assessments we use here at Herts. The precise pattern of what you will encounter varies hugely from programme to programme and will be explained to you by your own tutors when you arrive.

Here are just some of the assessment methods in use:

Writing an individual essay
Making a presentation on your own or with peers
Preparing a technical report
Undertaking a group project or inquiry
Producing a model, poster or documentary on your own or with a group
Designing a game, quiz or product
Writing a closed-book exam
Being interviewed about your learning
Being observed conducting a clinical examination, running a coaching session or making an argument in a mock trial
Completing an online multiple choice test
Writing reflectively about placements or other work-based activity
Compiling a portfolio
Delivering an 'elevator pitch'

You will often find you are asked to work with other students and are taught about building your ability to work within a team as well as independently.
