Student Success

Student Success supports students from underrepresented groups at the University. Our ambition is to transform students' lives by empowering and enabling them to be successful in their journey at Herts and beyond.

We work with a range of student groups including care leavers and care experienced students; independent (estranged) students; young adult carers; displaced refugee students; students in receipt of/eligible for the UH Bursary.

We provide:

Personalised advice and support on areas including accommodation, wellbeing and finding employment.
Financial support including bursaries, access to the Student Opportunity Fund, and adhoc supoprt such as food vouchers.
Opportunities, events and and part-time roles with our Ambassador Scheme.

Priority Student Groups we Support

Care Leavers and Care Experienced students

The Children (Leaving Care) Act 2000 defines a Care Leaver as someone who has been in the care of the Local Authority for a period of 13 weeks or more spanning their 16th birthday.

Independent Estranged Students

Estranged/Independent students are young people between the ages of 18-24 studying without the support of their parents (biological, step or adoptive parents), due to a breakdown in those relationships.

Young Adult Carers

Young Adult Carers (YAC) are students who are between the ages of 16-25 who care, unpaid, for a friend or family member with an illness or disability, mental health condition or an addiction.

Displaced Refugee Learners

Displaced (Refugee) Learners are students who are classed as being either Refugee or Seeking Asylum, or have another immigration status such as Limited Leave to Remain (LLR) or Discretionary Leave to Remain (DLR), due to being displaced from their country of origin. Students who are Seeking Asylum, or have DLR or LLR statuses, are considered to have 'overseas status' and therefore are not eligible for home fees or student finance. Students with Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), Refugee status or who are here under Humanitarian Protection are granted 'home status' and therefore are eligible for home fees and student finance.
